Sewing machines can actually appear frighteningly complex, especially to those people who do know how to use a sewing machine. However, you should not let your fear of an unfamiliar machine keep you from making and creating great textile projects.

The first step in learning how to use this machine is to determine and locate the parts of the machine. For instance, you need to know where to find the power switch. While this may seem silly, but knowing where to find the power switch is the most important step in learning how to use this machine. The power switch may be located in different places, as this will depend on the model of the sewing machine that you have. However, this is normally found on the right side portion of the body of the machine.

Aside from knowing where to find the power switch, you also need to know where to find the other components like the spool pin, thread guide, bobbin winder, stitch adjustment buttons, thread take up lever, and tension dial among others. After you are able to familiarize the parts, their location and their use, the next thing that you need to do is to set up your sewing machine.

In learning how to use a sewing machine, you have to make sure that you know how to set the machine up. The first step that you need to do is to place the machine on a sturdy work table. You also need a comfortable chair that has a height compatible to the height of the table. You should arrange the machine so the needle end is on your left side. You need to install a needle securely. After this, you need to wind and insert the bobbin. The sewing machine will make use of two thread sources, the lower thread and the top thread. Then, you need to thread the machine and get both the lower and top threads out. Once completed, you can plug the machine and switch it on. You should also plug the pedal into the sewing machine and place it comfortably under your feet.

The next thing that you need to do is start making your project. To start, you can select a medium stitch length and a straight stitch. Since the machines are different, you need to consult the manual of your machine to check how this is done. You can practice first on some scrap materials. This way, you can get the hang out of this task. You should not make use of heavier fabric for your first task. Instead, use thin fabric materials, as they are easier to sew. You should line the fabric under the needle. Then, lower the presser foot on the fabric. For the first few stitches, you need to hold the loose ends of the two threads on your machine to keep these from retreating into the fabric that you are working on. After stitching a short distance, you can let go and continue. Once you are finished, you can cut the thread.

Learning how to use a sewing machine may be difficult at first. However, with practice, you can improve your skills in using the machine. When you have mastered it, you can definitely make great textile wonders anytime.
